Interpreter of Flotsam

This book cover was created for a three-dimensional type project by cutting out black construction paper and backlighting it with my computer's screen saver. I then photographed the cutouts in a dark room. This was all done by hand, no digital manipulation (except for layering the photographs).

Interpreter of Flotsam is a fictional science-fiction novel.

Back Cover Description: THE WORLD IS GOING TO END IN TWO WEEKS. Someone, or something, has infiltrated humanity for the past twenty years preparing for the new apocalypse. Henry Stevenson sits sipping coffee when he hears a woman commenting, quite rudely, about her distaste for his new t-shirt. The only thing is, she didn’t actually speak. Henry Stevenson has a gift. He is also the world’s only hope for survival; he just doesn't know it yet.

Complex Words

Words are assembled out of combinations of units called morphemes. Complex words are words composed of a root + a prefix and/or a suffix. Our brain breaks down complex words into these morphemes in order to decipher meaning.

Design Manifesto

PROCESS BOOK is a product that is meant to help first-year design students during the conceptual stages of their design process. This fully customizable book, allows students to organize their ideas in a quick and efficient manner. Students would order and customize PROCESS BOOK from the product's website (image 2). They can choose which planning sheets (images 5-7) to include in their process book, and their color system. PROCESS BOOK helps students get to better ideas faster by asking key questions and prompting students to think in different ways.

This project was designed as my senior design manifesto, and includes the manifesto in the opening pages of the book (image 4).

BP Diptych

Two posters expressing frustration with BP's slow response to the oil spill in New Orleans, which flowed for three months in 2010.

My goal for this project was to explore how the same message can be conveyed using different media to exlicit two reactions. I chose to do a clean illustration of oil spilling from a clock, and then a more visceral photographic poster of a fish being covered in oil sequentially over time. (Yes, I actually painted that fish). *No living fish were harmed in the making of this project.

Curating Penguin Cove

For this project I was asked to make a poster mapping a system in the Saint Louis Zoo. I chose to map the indoor penguin exhibit, Penguin Cove. To convey the space I drew an isometric perspective of the space on Illustrator and then highlighted areas of interest.

Penguin Cove is the first ever walk-in, sub-Antarctic penguin exhibit in North America. Home to over 60 different penguins, the exhibit is one of the closest technologically feasible, near-perfect habitat reproductions at the zoo. The walk-through exhibit gives visitors the ultimate sensory experience engaging sight, smell, sound, and the chill of the Antarctic climate.

The Future of Genomics

The Human Genome Project was a landmark event for the field of genomics. In essence, it has allowed the genomic era to be a reality. The sequence though is only the beginning. Having the essentially complete sequence of the human genome is similar to having all the pages of a manual needed to make the human body. The challenge to researchers and scientists now is to determine how to read the contents of all these pages and then understand how the parts work together and to discover the genetic basis for health and the pathology of human disease.

This book is an adaptation of the paper A Vision for the Future of Genomics by Francis S. Collins, et al. It explores the future of genomics in the fields of biology, health, and society. In my book, I have taken the material presented in this scientific paper and made it easy to understand for the typical adult reader. My goal was to make genomics approachable and clear. This way, anyone can engage in the important questions genomics will be asking of our medical field and society in the future.

As a metaphor for making genomics clear, my book has a clear acetate dust jacket which I screen printed my genome symbol on.
